The Exercise Physiology Laboratory, School of Biological Sciences, directed by Dr. Mindy Millard-Stafford examines nutritional and training interventions that improve sport performance. Her group recently reported GT male collegiate distance runners have lower bone mineral density compared to age-matched, recreational athletes, a finding that, until recently, only has received medical attention in female distance runners (and other lean female athletes). Dr. Millard-Stafford is well-known for her work in sports nutrition and fluid replacement during exercise, having published important findings regarding the adverse effects of dehydration on both physical and mental performance. She is the Past President of the American College of Sports Medicine.
